The European Development Days (EDD 2017) which took place on 7-8 June 2017 in Brussels brought together actors from the development community to address current demanding development challenges on a global scale. This year, Europe’s leading forum on development emphasised the importance of private sector engagement for both sustainable economic growth and poverty alleviation worldwide.
In this regard, renewable energy has huge potentials for developing countries, both when it comes to poverty alleviation and combating climate change. The European Union has established the Electrification Financing Initiative (ElectriFI) and the Africa-EU Renewable Energy Cooperation Program (RECP) to support investments and market development on renewables in developing countries.
RECP supports market development specifically for African markets through a variety of focused actions such as policy advisory, private sector mobilisation and matchmaking, support to access to finance and skills development. ElectriFI closes funding gap for private sector driven renewable energy projects through innovative and flexible finance solutions.
Through ElectriFI and RECP, the critical energy access gap within developing and emerging markets is addressed, benefiting especially vulnerable groups by providing clean electricity while also mitigating climate change through the deployment of renewable energy.
As both ElectriFI and RECP represent innovative approaches supporting private sector investments and thus the market development of renewables in developing countries, ElectriFI and RECP introduced their projects as well as their impacts to the development community at a shared stand in the EDD Global Village.
