RECP’s partner, SolarPower Europe hosted the “On-Grid Solar: Africa Investment Forum” on June 23rd at Intersolar in Munich, Germany. The event promoted African solar markets and brought together the European and African solar industry with financiers and other key market participants. To get the most out of this first-class event, SolarPower Europe and the RECP first provided market insights, followed by a structured B2B matchmaking session. Intersolar trade show visitors, SolarPower Europe members, developers, investors and representatives from Africa and Europe took part in this fruitful side event and benefited from each other.
The potential of solar energy for the African continent cannot be overstated. In order to support Africa’s continuing economic growth and sustainable development, generation capacity on the continent will have to quadruple by 2040. Solar as a proven technology with an indisputable track record will be critical on a continent that boasts twice the insolation of traditional European markets in many regions. However, smart solutions and strong private investments are needed to achieve this goal.
The event commenced with an information workshop, which featured presentations from major market players (see downloads). First of all, the RECP introduced its programme and services. Second, the investment company responsAbility presented its firm and the available funding opportunities for African projects. These presentations were followed by speeches from the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trader (NBET) and the renewable energy consultant 3E.
As a second part of the event, the matchmaking session took place and offered a structured setting for stakeholders to meet interested business partners. 77 Participants from 18 different countries used this opportunity and contributed to an overall successful event. To complete the rewarding day, an informal reception was offered at the booth of SolarPower Europe.
