Description
The Powering Renewable Energy Opportunities (PREO) programme, supported by the IKEA Foundation and UK Aid, and delivered by the Carbon Trust and Energy 4 Impact, is designed to stimulate energy demand in rural Africa. PREO opens calls for grants to renewable energy programmes that are tailored to local contexts. Grant funding as well as technical assistance are provided to companies, projects and small and medium enterprises operating in sub-Saharan Africa in the productive use of energy sector. Targeted sectors include (but are not limited to) solar water pumping for irrigation, cold storage for food, agro-processing of crops, food value chain processing activities, electric mobility for taxi drivers and fishing boats.

Technical assistance
The PREO Technical Assistance Facility helps organisations to execute PURE-related initiatives and enterprise development, and to improve their activities’ viability, efficacy, and local impact. Technical assistance provided is tailored to the needs of the applicant.

Powering Renewable Energy Opportunities (PREO) is a demand-led, productive-use-of-renewable-energy (PURE) initiative that stimulates partnerships, innovation and learning to address the needs and improve the livelihoods of communities in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and the Pacific Island countries. The programme is co-funded by UK aid via the Transforming Energy Access (TEA) platform, and the IKEA Foundation. PREO provides grant funding and technical assistance and is delivered by the Carbon Trust and Energy 4 Impact.
