GET.invest and IRENA join forces under APRA to advance bankable clean energy projects

23 October 2025 | The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), through GET.invest, have announced a new step in their collaboration under the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa (APRA). This agreement will strengthen the joint efforts of both institutions to accelerate the development of bankable renewable energy projects and connect them with financiers.

The announcement was made during the APRA Investment Forum 2025, held in Freetown (Sierra Leone), where stakeholders from governments, international organisations, financiers and the private sector gathered to advance investment in renewables across the 10 countries of the APRA partnership.

Under this enhanced collaboration, GET.invest will provide technical assistance to renewable energy projects in APRA countries to reach bankability and access finance. In turn, IRENA will facilitate matchmaking between these projects and potential investors through its established platforms and convening power.

The joint approach aims at addressing one of the major bottlenecks in Africa’s energy transition – the limited number of investment-ready projects. By combining GET.invest’s expertise in bankability advisory and IRENA’s network of financiers, the two organisations will build a robust pipeline of clean energy projects that can attract private investment and accelerate progress towards APRA’s objectives.

Through this strengthened collaboration, IRENA and GIZ, via GET.invest, are joining forces to deliver real impact on the ground”, said Antonio Bernardini, Chief of Staff at IRENA. “Together, we will help bring more renewable energy projects in Africa to a stage where they can access financing, supporting APRA’s vision of increasing renewable energy capacity and investment in the continent”.

We are delighted to join forces with IRENA under the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa”, said Michael Franz, Team Leader of GET.invest. “Our complementary strengths – IRENA’s convening power and GET.invest’s advisory – will make a real difference in creating bankable projects and linking them to the right investors. This collaboration brings us one step closer to scaling private sector investment for renewables across Africa”.

The announcement marks a milestone in the collaboration between GET.invest and IRENA, paving the way for greater impact in mobilising finance for Africa’s renewable energy sector. Together, the two organisations will work to enable more projects to move from concept to construction — turning potential into power.
