Advancing clean energy investment in Kenya through APRA

29 July 2026 | The APRA Support Project has strengthened Kenya’s pipeline of bankable renewable energy projects, enhanced green finance capabilities and fostered new investment partnerships – laying the foundations for continued collaboration under the upcoming APRA Champions programme.

From strengthening investment-ready clean energy projects to building the capacity of financial institutions and connecting developers with financiers, the APRA Support Project has delivered tangible results in Kenya, helping accelerate the country’s renewable energy transition. Implemented between July 2024 and April 2026, the project formed part of the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa (APRA), an African-led initiative launched at COP28 to advance renewable energy deployment, green industrialisation and sustainable economic development across the continent.

The APRA Support Project in Kenya was implemented on behalf of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Government of Germany, where IKI is anchored in the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN). Selected individual projects are also the responsibility of the Federal Foreign Office (AA).

Working alongside its sister programme GET.transform, GET.invest delivered a package of technical assistance and market development services for the GIZ Energy Cluster in Kenya designed to strengthen the country’s clean energy investment ecosystem and mobilise greater private sector participation.

Building a stronger pipeline of bankable clean energy projects

Through its Finance Access Advisory (FAA), GET.invest exceeded its original target by mobilising 21 clean energy companies and projects across diverse market segments including grid-connected renewable energy, clean cooking, productive use of energy, mini-grids, e-mobility, green hydrogen and manufacturing.

The supported portfolio reflects both the diversity and maturity of Kenya’s clean energy market, ranging from early-stage companies to large-scale investment opportunities. All supported projects fulfilled at least one of the internationally recognised 2X Challenge criteria for gender-responsive investment, while more than half were fully Kenyan-owned enterprises.

Strengthening Kenya’s green finance ecosystem

Through its EDGE Finance services, GET.invest carried out a comprehensive assessment of Kenya’s green finance landscape before delivering tailored capacity-building support to Credit Bank, Cooperative Bank of Kenya, Equity Bank and Kenya Women Microfinance Bank (KWFT).

Thirty-five banking professionals completed a training programme, with every participant reporting improved knowledge of financing renewable energy projects. Dedicated sessions on gender-responsive finance further strengthened participating institutions’ understanding of how inclusive financing approaches can unlock additional market opportunities while supporting women-led businesses.

The engagement concluded with a roundtable in Nairobi that brought together banks, development finance institutions and sector partners to exchange experiences and identify opportunities to further scale green lending in Kenya.

Connecting projects, investors and partnerships

Alongside technical advisory, the APRA Support Project helped expand networking and investment opportunities through targeted mobilisation activities.

GET.invest organised matchmaking sessions during , facilitating nearly 200 business meetings between clean energy companies and financiers while achieving high levels of participant satisfaction and identified cooperation potential.

Working alongside the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the project contributed to the APRA Investment Fora in Kenya (2024) and Sierra Leone (2025) through project pitching sessions, business-to-business matchmaking and knowledge sharing on project development, financing and workforce development for Africa’s renewable energy transition.

Continuing the momentum through APRA Champions

Building on these results, follow-up activities are expected to continue under the forthcoming APRA Champions programme. Supported by BMUKN, the next phase is expected to further strengthen renewable energy investment ecosystems in Kenya, Ghana and Namibia, while expanding advisory services for clean energy companies, financial institutions and investment mobilisation activities.

By building on the foundations established through APRA, these future activities aim to continue supporting African countries in accelerating their clean energy transitions, mobilising private investment and advancing sustainable, inclusive economic development.
