With support from RECP, the Global Off-Grid Lighting Association (GOGLA) hosted the Off-Grid Solar Investment Academy during the Sankalp Africa Summit in Nairobi, Kenya (23 – 24 February 2017). Building on the knowledge of sector experts, the Academy aimed to support early-stage solar businesses by sharing best practices on how to overcome barriers to investment and growth.
This edition of the Academy focused on supporting early-stage solar businesses, or other businesses interested in entering the off-grid solar market, to attract investment and successfully handle negotiations with investors. The core target audience were off-grid solar companies who are active in sub-Saharan Africa.
Lack of access to finance is the main barrier keeping the off-grid lighting and electrification sector from scaling up. While both sales and investment have developed significantly in recent years, the market remains in an early stage. Continued growth requires access to new and more senior sources of funding for the evolving pioneers, and expansion of existing sources to replicate the earlier successes.
The first edition of the Off-Grid Solar Investment Academy was held in Nairobi in November 2016. Video recordings of the previous edition are available online.
The GOGLA Academy was organised as part of the Sankalp Africa Summit. The event focused on “Spurring the Entrepreneurship Economy” in Africa with increased spotlight on strategic sectors, regions and stakeholder groups that are driving Africa’s growth as a destination for global investment. In a short span of 3 years, Sankalp Africa Summit has grown to become one of the largest platforms for innovation, entrepreneurship and impact investing on the continent.
