SolarPlaza and the Global Off-Grid Lighting Association (GOGLA) jointly organised the conference ‘Unlocking Solar Capital: Africa’, which took place from 1 to 2 November 2016 in Nairobi, Kenya. During the two-day event, more than 300 executives from all over the world came together to engage in solving Africa’s solar energy funding gap. The participants included staff from development banks, investment funds, solar developers, Independent Power Producers (IPP), Engineering Procurement & Construction Companies (EPC) and other solar stakeholders. The conference brought together African and European solar industry representatives with financiers and other key market participants.

"I’d like to congratulate you and your colleagues on a ‘job well done’ for your strategic partnership with SolarPlaza and GOGLA on the Unlocking Solar Capital Africa Conference. The RECP-supported matchmaking session was an effective forum for EPC, financier and other market participant introductions. This was the first RECP sponsored conference I’ve attended, but it definitely won’t be the last."
Oren Zukerman, Business Development Manager, Lombard Guarantee

The RECP and its partners SolarPower Europe and GOGLA contributed to the event in various ways. In addition to organising the main conference, GOGLA was hosting a master class, where leading investment intermediaries and advisers talked about “Typical barriers standing between a business plan and a signed investment deal”. SolarPower Europe contributed most notably through the organisation of the “On-grid Track” of the conference programme. SolarPower Europe mobilised the industry know-how from its membership, as well as from key decision-makers from both the public and financial spheres.

At the heart of SolarPower Europe’s and RECP’s contribution was a dedicated matchmaking session on 2 November, which brought together key stakeholder groups from all relevant solar market segments. The session combined all three programmatic tracks (On-grid, Off-grid and SolarHomeSystems) of the conference and thereby spanned the entire solar market.
